Arabic Music Days
Kinan Azmeh & Naseer Shamma
December 14 - December 16
Eighty-five years ago, in March 1932, musicians and scholars from the Middle East and North Africa and European composers and musicologists, among them Béla Bartók and Paul Hindemith, gathered in Cairo for what would become known as the Cairo Congress—the first large-scale symposium and festival dedicated to the presentation, discussion, and documentation of the musical traditions of the Arab world.
Inspired by this historic event, a group of musicians from Syria, Iran, and Iraq, led by Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and Iraqi oud player Naseer Shamma, will come together at the Pierre Boulez Saal for a weekend of performances, talks, and workshops to explore the rich musical legacy of the Cairo Congress.
