Gamelan meets 21st-century music. The traditional Indonesian orchestra is reimagined and transformed by today's composers. On January 21st at 6pm, Composers Concordance presents, in collaboration with Goddard Riverside Community Arts, the program 'Gamelan Yowana Sari,' featuring music of Gene Pritsker, David Rozenblatt, Zach Seely, Dan Cooper, Daniel Schnyder, and Monroe Golden, among others. Gamelan Yowana Sari, directed by Professor Michael Lipsey of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, performs on gongs, metallophones, drums, and other traditional instruments crafted by I Pande Sukarta in Bali. The ensemble is made up of college and graduate students, as well as community members, composers and local musicians, taking on the task of learning and premiering this brand new musical fusion of styles, sounds, and ideas.
