The Jazz Epistles were South Africa’s earliest most influential jazz (bebop) band. This was an all-black, well-respected band that emerged as a resistant, anti-apartheid music group and was famous for jamming into the late and fuzzy nights on the streets of Sophiatown. The musicians were Abdullah Ibrahim on piano, Hugh Masekela on trumpet, Jonas Gwangwa on trombone, Kippie Moeketsi on alto saxophone, Johnny Gertze on bass, Makaya Ntshoko and Early Mabuza on drums. The band was in full swing in the 1960s and then the members went their separate ways, primarily driven out by apartheid’s oppressive laws and the resulting lack of musical opportunities. Now, they reunite for a special tribute concert with two of the original members, Abdullah Ibrahim on piano and Hugh Masekela on trumpet - both African pioneers of modern jazz.
