The Comforting Science of Winter Music: 10 Songs to Soothe Your Soul

How Music Can Help You Embrace the Winter Season
Science of Winter Music

Winter is a challenging season for many of us at New Music World. I’ve always felt that music nerds are particularly prone to seasonal affective disorder. It’s just a theory.

Cold weather, short days, and long nights combined with too much Depeche Mode is a depressing recipe for living.

Did you know that music can actually help you embrace the winter season?

Studies have shown that listening to music can increase the production of endorphins in the brain, which are chemicals that can help reduce stress and improve mood. And when you listen to music that’s specifically tailored to the winter season, it can help you feel cozy, warm, and content.

Growing up in a small town in the Midwest, winters were always tough for me. The days were short, the nights were long, and the cold seemed to seep into my bones. But one thing that always helped me get through those long, dark months was music.

Whether I was listening to classic holiday tunes or melancholy ballads, music had a way of making me feel connected to something bigger than myself. It reminded me that even in the coldest of winters, there was still beauty and warmth to be found.

One winter, when I was feeling particularly down, I stumbled upon Neil Young’s Winterlong. As I listened to the song’s gentle melody and poetic lyrics, I felt a sense of comfort and warmth wash over me. It was as if the song was speaking directly to me, reminding me that even in the darkest of winters, there was still beauty and hope to be found.

From that moment on, Winterlong became my go-to song for whenever I was feeling blue during the winter months.

It was a reminder that even in the midst of the cold and dark, there was still music to soothe my soul.
