Brilliant Adventure by David Bowie

A Reissue, Of Sorts

The 1990s were meant to be the decade in which Bowie reinvented himself and while he tried hard, mostly, it didn’t gel with fans.

So, it was with some trepidation that we approached Brilliant Adventure, a huge reissue and compilation of almost all of his efforts from that decade.

And yet, surprisingly, it’s actually very good. Now, we won’t pretend that there’s a huge hit single that never saw the light of day hidden here, there isn’t.

But what you do have is a collection of solid, entertaining tracks that have really proven themselves to have stood the test of time.

The opening album, yes album – there are 18 discs here, Black Tie White Noise isn’t great, and it wasn’t when it came out either.

But from there on, Outside, Earthling, etc. are all rock solid examples of why David Bowie is a British national treasure and one of the greatest musicians to ever tread the planet.

There’s also a host of bonus material that includes the “lost” album Toy which is interesting if not always essential too.

Brilliant Adventure is a big box set with a big price tag but for Bowie fans, it’s very close to being essential, and for everyone else? If you have the budget, we think you’ll have a lot of fun with it.
